Editorial staff

As an editorial staff we carefully examined each school board candidate individually, grading them based on a variety of criteria after our initial interviews. Rather than endorsing, we evaluated each candidate on his or her own merits and graded them on we thought they would do. Here are the average grades our six-person editorial board gave to each candidate:

 

ALEXANDRA CURLIN: 84%

Pros:

  • Had daughters go through the Township.
  • Has already run and won before.
  • Says public office isn’t about the holder of office, but putting the public first.

Cons:

  • Had to resign from board after losing appeals due to living in the wrong district during last election.

DEIRDRE GEORGE DAVIS: 83%

Pros:

  • Has strong desire to close the achievement gap to create equal opportunities.
  • Recognizes bias in the classroom, desires to change that.
  • Had child graduate from Township with one currently at Crooked Creek.
  • Wants to bring in more high quality teachers.

Cons:

  • Does not have as much experience as others in this area.

JOHN FENCL: 82%

Pros:

  • Has specific plan set for next five years.
  • Has most experience on board.
  • Voted in favor of athletics to return.
  • Focuses on minority equality.

Cons:

  • Focuses seems just on on the five year strategic plan.

TRACEY HORTH KRUEGER: 84%

Pros:

  • Had four children in Township.
  • Focuses on equality and disparities.

Cons:

  • Not as unique as others in goals for Township.
  • No previous experience in similar roles.

DORAN MORELAND: 73%

Pros:

  • Has bright vision for future of the Township.
  • Focuses on community based- goals and wants to help every student.

Cons:

  • Could not provide verification of college degree, nor could Indiana University when fact-checked.
  • Focuses on listening rather than immediate action.
  • Plans seem to be more flash than substance.
