Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, is a respiratory virus which can lead to fatality. The virus was first reported in Wuhan City, China in late December 2019. As of March 10, more than 116,736 cases worldwide in 104 countries have been confirmed with 64,752 fully recovering from the virus and 4,095 deaths. 69% of confirmed cases are concentrated in China.

Coronavirus is airborne, which means it can be transmitted through the air. It is most commonly spread when an infected individual coughs or sneezes, but it can also be spread through close contact (within 6 feet) with someone.

The best ways to prevent the spread of the virus are washing hands frequently with soap and water for a minimum 20 seconds, as well as avoiding eye, mouth or any sort of facial contact. Social distancing is also important. Avoiding physical contact with others, like handshakes, can also be beneficial.

Locally, Avon Community School Corporation has closed district schools for two weeks due to one confirmed coronavirus case in an Avon elementary school and a second suspected case.

NC Superintendent Nikki Woodson sent an email out to faculty last night reminding them of expectations for potential e-Learning days as well as guidelines to stay sanitary and safe in wake of the coronavirus’ presence in central Indiana.

Assistant Athletic Director Andy Elkins was able to provide some insight about the effect coronavirus-related school cancellations would have on athletic activities.

“If school is shut down, all sports are shut down,” Elkins said. “Here’s the thing, in most cases, whoever we are competing against will probably be in the same boat as us. What I worry about is I don’t want our springtime athletes to lose a quarter of their season due to this, but once we get directed by the CDC and the Marion County Board of Health, there’s nothing we can do but follow what they say,” Elkins said.

Elkins noted that there is a meeting today at 1:30 p.m. between the principal’s cabinet, the township administration and department chairs regarding protocol and regulations concerning the coronavirus.
