Former Purdue University football player Rondale Moore died on Saturday Feb. 21 2026 by suicide. Moore was an electric player to watch and was a fan favorite.
“He was very competitive and a great athlete all around. He was electric and did whatever the team needed him to do. He was definitely one of my favorite players,” junior Chace Maple said.
In Moore’s freshman season at Purdue he was a first-team All-American. Moore entered the NFL draft in 2021 after three seasons at Purdue and was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round. In his career Moore battled many injuries that prevented him from playing.
“When you’re on your own trying to chase a dream it gets hard,” weights coach Connor Andras said.
The reaction to Moore’s death was a shock along with a lot of sadness.
“I was very surprised he was a young kid and had a bright future ahead of him,” Maple said. “It was sad to see someone that I watched as a kid do something like that.”
Mental health is something athletes often struggle with.
“Mental health is very important in athletes,” Andras said. “Athletes not only have the stress of academic and social life but they also have athletic stressors as well.”
Struggling with mental health is something no one should have to do alone.
“Talking with coaches, parents and family about mental health is very important. I think there’s a stigma with student athletes to be tough and push through things when that is not the case, everybody needs somebody to talk to,” Andras said.
Baseball coach Andy McClain helps support players with their mental health while still pushing them to be great.
“You don’t want to prevent somebody from working hard or trying to be great, you just have to keep it all in balance and perspective,” McClain said.
McClain emphasized the importance of mental health with athletes to the baseball team during practice after the death of Moore.
“It’s interesting how it [Mental health] has gotten more important over the years and I think that’s just because of education,” McClain said.
Mental health is something that affects everyone, not just athletes. It is important to reach out to people for help or reach out and let people know that they matter. Last week North Central hosted a “You Matter Week” where the school is highlighted the importance of making sure everyone feels seen.
“This is for everybody, I don’t think you could put a word on how important it is,” McClain said.
