Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a progressive, degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head impacts, often found in athletes and military veterans.
CTE comes from multiple concussions and injuries to the brain.
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly or shake inside the skull.
Football players are known to commonly experience CTE because of frequent head collisions.
But how can CTE ruin a person’s life?
CTE can increase aggression levels which could be dangerous for people around them.It could also lead to severe depression making mood swings inevitable.
¨CTE damages your brain over time if you constantly get head injuries and that damages your functions in your output in life,¨ junior Harper Perez said.
It could cause changes in the victim’s personality and create issues in their personal lives.
A concussion can mean nothing at first, but over time, the brain gets more and more exposed and your brain starts to take damage.
It can lead to post concussion syndrome, which is dangerous to endure.
¨Concussions can affect an athlete because it makes them sit out and it messes with their confidence,¨ junior Lizzie Reese said.
Concussions sideline a player for at least a week so it could slow down their momentum.
¨After sustaining multiple concussions, athletes might be forced to retire medically. The more concussion they sustain, it would take longer to heal due to experiencing symptoms in daily activities. Participating in contact sports might not be an option after multiple concussions due to the higher risk of recurrence. Athletes may experience difficulties in school due to symptoms,¨ athletic trainer Miho Sayles said.
Having a concussion history and continuing to play high contact sports, it can be very risky. There is no way to fully prevent concussions but people can wear protective head gear. It’s also important to not rush back to playing.
