On March 18 students were selected to attend the InspireU Leadership Conference.
In this conference students were able to listen to different speakers including principal Jagga Rent, to learn about strategies to prevent burnout, become a better leader and create a personal brand.
Coaches and club leaders selected various students to attend.
“I think I was invited because I see myself as a leader in the classroom and on my baseball team. I think my coaches picked me because I am very interactive with my teammates and I bring us together in a way that helps us succeed,” junior Grant Trisler said.
Many student athletes attended the conference to learn more about how to manage their time and prevent themselves from overscheduling.
“I was invited because I think for my age I showed a good amount of leadership for being on a team that I was shocked I made,” freshman Lauren Alkire said.
Student athletes were not the only participants to attend.
“I was invited to this conference because I’m president of the student council,” junior Deonna Armstead said.
The conference had a wide variety of student leaders and they were all able to learn skills that apply to their position and in their life.
“The InspireU conference taught me a lot about what it means to be a leader and what it means to display myself to other people,” Trisler said.
Students learned many skills about the correct way to present themselves to make sure they have a good representation.
“I’m going to be more thoughtful and careful about how I portray myself and expose myself on social media because of how it reflects on who I am now and in the future,” Trisler said.
The leaders of the conference express how the way students represent themselves matters a lot for their future. Also being a student leader calls for setting a good example for others to follow.
“My biggest takeaway was that you don’t have to have a leadership role to be a leader,” Armstead said.
Armstead recognizes how leadership comes in many forms.
“My biggest takeaway was the advice on how to be a leader without being burnt out,” Alkire said.
One of the several sessions students were able to attend was about how to prevent burnout. In this session tips about taking time alone and balancing activities were recommended.
“Something important about leadership is taking care of yourself before others and showing others the right things to do,” Alkire said.
Alkire highlights how part of preventing burnout is taking personal time to prevent feeling overstimulated.
Not only did students learn about tips to become better leaders, they also learned about why leadership is important.
“I learned leadership is important because many people look up to leaders and it is important to display a good character and set a good example for others who look up to you,” Trisler said.
Students learned how leadership is important for many different reasons. Being a leader calls for a lot of responsibility and setting a good example is one of the most important.
“I think we should keep having this conference because it provides awareness to many of the upcoming leaders in our school who are the future in the workforce,” Trisler said.
