By: Luke Watson, Chayce Rowe

NCHSLive! sat down with undefeated girls basketball coach DeeAnn Ramey to discuss the season and her role as a leader for the team.

Q: How many years have you been coaching? How many with North Central?

A: “I have been coaching for 13 year, 6 years at North Central.”

Q: What is your greatest accomplishment as a coach?

A: “My greatest accomplishment as a coach was winning state in 2011-2012 and this year’s Marion County Championship. Also, coaching 1 Indiana Miss Basketball, along with 5 Indiana All-Stars.”

Q: Besides your daughter, which player was the most fun to coach in all your years of coaching?

A: “I don’t know that I can pick one particular player, but I would have to say that this year’s team has been the most fun to coach. The chemistry and team unity on and off the court of this group of girls is special!”

Q: What is one thing you want all of your players to take away by their senior year?

A: “That commitment, sacrifice, loyalty, and hard work are worthy of the outcome.”

Q: How do you keep your emotions in check while coaching?

A: “Honestly, I need to do a better job at controlling my emotions. Knowing the sacrifices your players make during a season and how hard they work, it’s hard not to show emotion on a questionable call.”

Q: What is the most challenging part about being a coach, teacher, and mother?

A: “The most challenging part is trying to keep everything balanced.  Coaching at North Central is difficult because you are still expected to teach a full class load.  (Most of the coaches in our conference teach fewer classes)  The demands that coaching requires increases every year.  People don’t understand the number of hours spent on the phone to college coaches, the number of hours attending meeting to get recognition for your players,  the number of hours spent scouting or watching film so you can prepare to win so we can bring recognition to NC.  It is evident by me answering your questions at 2:00 am.

Taylor and my husband have definitely had to sacrifice. Taylor grew up in a gym.  If I was in the gym or at school working she was right there with me.The time requirement it takes to be a successful teacher and coach has sadly affected  our family time.   It took me a long time to realize that I can’t do it all so somethings had to give.  But as a mother you beat yourself up when you feel you have fallen short.  Now I just do the best I can and hope its good enough.”

Q: What are you most looking forward to about the tournament?

A: “I am looking forward to watching this group of girls embrace the attention they are receiving and watching their enjoyment as they compete to achieve their goal.”
