As prom season approaches, many students feel excitement about the big night filled with suits, dresses, photos and lots of dancing. Along with all the excitement, however, comes a growing price tag. From tickets to outfits and scheduled appointments, the cost of prom can add up very quickly.
While prom is often seen as one of the most memorable nights of high school, the cost behind the experience can vary a lot from different students. Some students save money by borrowing dresses or doing their own hair, others spend a lot of money to get a bigger, more memorable experience.
Senior Gabby Moore, who planned carefully for prom last year, gives a perspective about how much students are really spending during junior prom. Moore wanted the full prom experience.
¨Prom can get very expensive, so my mom and I decided to both put money in to make it work. I wanted it to go my way. I spent at least $400 on everything. Tickets, Nails, Hair & My Dress,¨
senior Gabby Moore said.
Some students have the ability to ask people to help them out with the cost of it all, while others have to mainly rely on their own money for prom.
¨Prom can be affordable for some students, but not for everyone. Some people are able to ask family to cover the costs, when others might have to use their own money,¨ Moore said
The cost of prom can go up if students want extravagant outfits and accessories. This isn’t necessary for everyone but it can be very exciting for some.
¨So I had spent about $500 on the suit and shoes. Me and my best friend Nina, wanted to match with violet so we had to plan accordingly. We also drove to prom in a purple Lamborghini Urus.¨ Cambell said.
While Cambell’s prom night was very expensive, some people don’t understand how much planning and preparation goes into making the night come together. From coordinating outfits to matching colors and arranging transportation, it’s a stressful process that can take months.
¨Me and her took around 3-4 months for all the planning. I had to get fitted for a tux and order my shoes & she had to go out of state to buy her dress. We also had to plan about taking that car to prom,¨ Cambell said.
As prom inches closer, students will continue preparing for a very memorable & significant night of high school.
