Homework has been a big debate over the years. Many think homework is not necessary, while others believe homework is essential.
Having so much homework can take a toll on students’ mental health. Many students participate in after school activities that can take up a lot of time, often having students getting home late at night leaving not a lot of time for homework.
“Being given too much homework can put a strain on us and make us really stressed out, and it can take up a lot of time, especially if we have sports or after school activities,” sophomore Jericho Odle said.
The stress with homework and sports can be a lot. Homework can also take up social time as well.
“I can’t hang out with my friends or go out or anything because I’m worried about when assignments are due,” sophomore Keilyn Trejo-Garcia said.
Having to do more school work after school leaves little time for students to have any social time.
“I often stay up late finishing assignments so I have to sacrifice my sleep,” senior Kaelee Jacobs said.
Sleep is something that is important for everyone, especially teenagers. It is recommended for teenagers to have between 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Having to wake up for school the next morning after a long night of homework can reduce that sleep, causing teens to be more tired when going to school the next day.
Many think that homework can be essential and useful to students.
“I think teachers can be strategic about what students do at home, if it’s something that helps supplement or get them ready for the next class, or if it’s something that makes up any of their work,” Assistant Principal Bryan Ramirez said.
Homework is something that is supposed to help students develop their skills and to strengthen their understanding of a topic.
“I think for some classes it’s necessary so that we can retain [information] better, like a language class,” Odle said.
Classes like a language class, homework can be useful for students in being able to help understand the language better.
While there are many cons to homework, it helps students learn material and gives them extra practice if needed.
“I think homework does improve my learning because it allows me to practice the concepts I learn in class, and it aids for my success in tests,” Jacobs said.
