Students, families, and administrators still argue if this is helping or hurting the education of the students. Many students feel as though it gives them a break from school routine.
E-learning days remove pressure of rushing to school and getting through the halls. However, some students prefer in person school days with the in person interactions, hands on work and feel as if they can more efficiently do their work without distractions taking away from their school work.
E-learning days give students a chance to comfortably work at home. Students who also prefer quieter and calmer settings when doing school work, often report that it helps them stay focused.
“I love E-learning days because I can chill and do school and have all day to do my work,” freshman Avri Holman said.
The flexibility that the E-learning days provide helps the students manage their time better.
“I think E-learning helps kids learn on their own but lacks in-person interaction,” junior Robert Sattfield said.
Many believe independence is important at North Central because it helps kids stay motivated and learn to manage on their own.
Some kids may like the E-learning days but the face to face support is what some students need to understand the material better and ask more questions.
For the teacher aspect of E-learning days it is a little harder with watching for emails, posting assignments, and the workload getting heavier.
“As a person with no kids and only a pet to provide for, I love the flexibility, but also I hear the challenge with teachers who have kids,” Math teacher Olivia Watson said.
North Central administrators point out that the use of E-learning days prevent the school year from lasting longer and allow us a certain amount of flex days.
One of the raising questions due to E-learning days is the level of student engagement and attendance.
“For my students I think it lowers engagement and we are limited by supplies students have at home and can’t have certain expectations because of what they might not have at home,” Watson said. “Students with cameras off too make it hard to connect and again with the lack of engagement.”
As North Central continues to deal with weather delays and unexpected closures, E-learning will always remain a significant part of the academic world.
Despite this, North Central’s use of the E-Learning days will continue to spark debate among all parts of the school community as people are concerned about their effectiveness.
