This show choir season is off to a strong start. The North Central show choir is renowned for its outstanding performances and exceptional voices.
“My most memorable performance was when I got the best performer at one of our competitions, because I didn’t know it was a thing. So when they called my name, I just liked it, it was just such a good feeling,” says senior Meta Selke.
There are two different show choir groups. The first group is the Counterpoints, and the second is the Descants. Both of these groups are led by Jared McElroy and Daria Weingartner.
The Counterpoints are a co-ed choir that is nationally recognised as a premier concert. The Descants are the most advanced women’s choir and are recognised as one of the best women’s show choirs in Indiana.
There are 55 members in each choir group, and they have all been rehearsing tirelessly for their first performance.
“This year we’ve been learning how to do the splits, which I think is really good. We are all trying to learn the splits because our theme this season is really contemporary. So we have to know how to, and I just think it’s really helpful,” says Selke.
Show choir is a form of dance and singing that requires learning new dance moves and songs. Practicing takes many months to perfect and memorise lyrics and choreography.
“The warm-ups I find most effective are running laps, stretching for conditioning and dancing. For singing Deep breaths and vocal exercises help us warm up,” says senior Heidi Harmless.
Many Descants and Counterpoint members are excited for this season. Show choir is not only about the performances but also the friendships and bonds made along the way. The show choir groups offer many team bonding activities and opportunities to spend time together.
“We have a lot of outside-of-school activities. Like, we’ll have sleepovers and, in our homerooms at choir competitions, we’ll hang out and play games and stuff,” says Selke.
On top of the sleepovers and choir competitions, the show choir also has an off-the-wall team.
“My favorite part of being in the show choir is getting to hang out with all my friends and having a fun time dancing and on stage and performing. I also love all the team bonding we do, like we have a party, and we have an off-the-wall team,” says Harmless.
This show choir season is on the rise, and with all the students working so hard, they are going to do great. Fans of the show choir can look forward to their first performance in February. Students are looking forward to many things this season.
”I’m looking forward to our sets because they are really different from what we usually do so I’m excited to see what other schools will do and like the audience will think of the change,” says Selke.
