Intramural basketball is a fun way to get involved at North Central while playing recreational sports with and against your friends.
“I decided to play intramural basketball because it is a fun activity to get your friends together and get some exercise during the week,” junior Grant Trisler said.
Sophomore Tessa Eynon agrees that intramural sports are a great activity but they also broaden horizons. Tessa Eynon was on the girls varsity soccer team so basketball was a nice switch-up.
“I decided to participate in intramural basketball so I could play a different sport with all my friends,” Eynon said.
Unfortunately, those who are in season for basketball cannot participate but they can offer courtside assistance. Junior Mckenzi Rutland is on the girls varsity basketball team and is stepping up to help junior Lily Heger’s team out.
“Our coach is going to be Mckenzi Rutland and we are just going to try to put our best players out and play hard,” Heger said.
While strategy and grit make a good team plan, sometimes the outcome doesn’t matter. Trisler enjoys playing basketball for reasons aside from victory.
“Intramural basketball makes me feel pretty good. I feel like it’s a good way to socialize during the week and have some fun even if you win or lose because you get to hangout with your friends and play against people you know as well,” Trisler said.
Coming up with a team name is a fun part of forming a team. Common interests of the team make for a good name.
“Our team name is gang beasts. We came up with our name because we thought it would sound cool and is based on a game we like to play,” Eynon said.
There are many aspects of basketball that make for a good game plan. Making sure it’s a fun experience for the whole team is Trisler’s strategy.
“Our team’s strategy is to really work on passing the ball and have an equal opportunity for each player to score and play good basketball overall,” Trisler said.
In intramural basketball there are multiple leagues to sign up for depending on skill level. Some aren’t ready for competitiveness yet.
“We’re in the B league because we’re not good enough to be in A league yet and we want to beat everybody,” Heger said.
Other teams strike caution to the wind and are up for the challenge.
“We are in the A league. We don’t really know our competition yet but we know it’s going to be very competitive and we are excited to compete,” Trisler said.
Making a team is also an accomplishment of its own. Orchestrating and questioning to form a final team can be difficult. Heger wants to give all props to a certain team member for putting it all together.
“Putting together our team was a group effort. I want to throw out some names, I’ll say Meredy Malloy on Snapchat,” Heger said.
Intramural basketball is the perfect activity for a way to make friends and have good fun. Sign up forms for intramural basketball are available to students J215 in Will Dinwiddie’s classroom.
“I have done intramurals in previous years and it was very fun, but I’m really excited for this year because I think our team is really good and we are older so we think we can compete more. I think it will be equally as fun because it’s just a really good thing to do,” Trisler said.
