Tractors at the state fair. The state fair began on Aug 3.

The state fair is taking place from Aug 3 to Aug 19, and will be located on the fairgrounds. On Fridays and Saturdays, the gates are open from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every other day of the week. However, the midway will be open until 10 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and until 11 p.m. on all other days of the week. Admission is 13 dollars everyday.

At the state fair, there is something to do for everyone, whether it’s eating fried foods, going on rides, going to the circus or seeing farm animals.

“My favorite things to do are either going on all the rides or seeing the 4H animals,” senior Sarah Meagher said.

“My favorite thing to do is that I like to try the super American foods,” senior Sarah Griffith said.

For the first time there will be a circus at the fair this year. They will put on three free shows every day with the exception of Thursdays. The shows will be at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. daily, except for on Thursdays when there is no show at 1 p.m. However, some students are unhappy with this new addition to the fair.

“I personally don’t like circuses, because a vast majority abuse and malnourished their animals, especially elephants,” Griffith said.

Due to the new addition of the circus, the theme of the fair this year is “Step Right Up! The Greatest 17 Days of Summer.”

As always, there are lots of interesting new foods to try. For example, inside out grilled cheese, a hot dog inside a pickle fried in corn dog batter, deep fried sugar cream pie and a bacon grilled cheese sandwich. There are still classic fair foods.

“My favorite food at the fair was probably fried mac and cheese bc it was so American and weird,” Griffith said.

“My favorite food is the elephant ear,” Meagher said.

Located at the midway, there are 48 rides, including mega drop, speed, a mardi gras glasshouse and cliffhanger. Each ride costs different amounts of coupons. The cost is five dollars for four coupons, 25 dollars for 22 coupons, and 60 dollars for 55 coupons.

“My favorite ride is the ferris wheel, because of the amazing view,” Griffith said.

“My favorite ride is alien abduction,” Meagher said.
