The newly released adaptation of Wuthering Heights was unsettling, yet entertaining. It is suggested for a more mature audience and young adults.
Set in northern England, Wuthering Heights tells a story of two lovers who cannot be together because of differing financial classes. The setting throughout the movie portrays Wuthering Heights as boring, gloomy and depressing. Overall, it’s a sad place to be. This scene goes very well with the way the movie is. The fog and the rain really help show how depressing this place can be and it shows. It makes the viewer feel depressed watching this. The sun is never up and it is always raining and always foggy and there is always candle light or light from the fireplace.
With Margot Robbie playing Catherine and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, the story starts off with them as kids, Catherine is a smart, ambitious and loving girl. Heathcliff is a unable to receive education yet protective of Catherine. Over time, they grow up together and things slowly start to change. Heathcliff has to help around the house while Catherine is on the hunt for a husband. She eventually meets Mr. Linton and marries him. When making the choice, she tells Nelly that she could never marry Heathcliff because they would be beggars causing Heathcliff to leave and come back to fight for her love but he is too late, as she’s already married.
This movie is a very predictable movie with the typical love story type of plot. Heathcliff comes back and they start having an affair. The storyline and plot is definitely good, however it is very predictable. When Heathcliff runs away in sadness you know he’s going to come back for her. Anyone can see that. You also can sense something bad is going to happen at the end with everything that Catherine and Heathcliff do behind Mr. Linton’s back. Catherine ends up dying from birth complications.
Overall though, it is a good movie with a good plot and a good storyline, however it is kind of a weird movie because of how gloomy and gothic is it and there are many weird scenes. It is very predictable and has the typical love story plot where someone’s heart gets broken, then they leave and come back for them, and then someone dies. That’s not my favorite, however it is different from others because of the setting and the characters. If a gothic kind of crazy love movie is your thing you should definitely watch Wuthering Heights. My rating for this move is 3 out of 5 stars.
