The Light Café is now open. With an opening date of 1-15-26, they are now up and running and taking orders. The Light Café was first opened in September of 2012 and is run through J. Everett Light Career Center’s Culinary Arts Program by students. This program gives many young chefs freedom in a real kitchen and sets many aspiring chefs up for success.
The Light Café students are all juniors and seniors. Their menu changes weekly and contains cooking from scratch in every dish. The menu has 10 options including international and regional foods.
The menu consisted of four breakfast options for the February 4-5 menu. Its breakfast options were the chicken and waffles, breakfast frites and a breakfast platter all set at the price of $8 per meal. They also have biscuits and gravy under the breakfast category for a price of $6. Moving onto the soups and salads for this week they have loaded baked potato soup and chicken salad with your choice of dressing. The soup costs $3 for a cup and $4 for a bowl while the salad costs $8. Their lunch menu for the week consists of four different meals. They had ramen noodles, a cafe cheeseburger, a ribeye lunch and a chicken sandwich. All of these lunch meals cost only $8 besides the ribeye which costs $17.99. Finally their dessert menu contains three items. Vanilla ice cream, pineapple upside down cake and banana pudding all costing $4 each.
They are open Thursdays and Fridays 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and are available for only carryout at this time. People can call ahead and order by going to the JELCC Light Cafe webpage and calling the listed number. The menu and cafe updates can also be found on their web page.
I recently visited this cafe to try a bit of food and evaluate the customer service. When I showed up I was greeted and shown a seat to wait for my food. It took the kitchen about 25 minutes to prepare my order.
I ordered the chicken and waffles off the menu and they were very good. The chicken was tender and had a delicious crispy breading. The waffle was a large, fluffy belgium waffle with a mouth water syrup. While I was waiting I received a free refrigerated minute maid lemonade and everyone I spoke to was very kind and helpful. My meal cost me 8 dollars in total and came with butter and syrup. I can tell that this restaurant is very well constructed and professional.
My overall review of the cafe would be a 9/10. The customer service was great and they were quick to finish my order. I really enjoyed my chicken and waffles and I will be eating there again.
