The NC recycling club is an exciting and benefitting club. It gives a safe space to anyone interested in helping clean up our planet.
The club meets in Jill Thrasher-Reid’s room every Monday. Jill Thrasher-Reid is in charge of the recycling club and leads each meeting.
“On Mondays, we go around to the teacher’s classrooms, grab their recycling and then put it all into one big recycling bin out by JEL,” club member and senior Maggie Kruger said.
Every monday the club goes from room to room collecting all the recyclables.
They also collected plastic lids and caps in hopes to create a bench at NC. The recycling club is planning on getting this bench in March and placing it at the front of the school.
“For years, the recycling club just recycled paper and I said I would love to make a bench and collect caps. And so now, for a year, we’ve been collecting caps as well. We are taking a field trip on Wednesday to pick up the bench,” Thrasher-Reid said.
Many students feel this club is a safe space and enjoy the group setting and members of the club. During meetings the club members will sort and collect caps together.
“My favorite part is how many people it brings together, so not just all the students, but the staff who are collecting caps,”Thrasher-Reid said, “and then there are community members who are collecting caps, and feeling like, even though we might not make a huge difference, we are doing something.”
The club collects as much recycling as they can but everyone pitching in with bottle caps and recycling paper is what really makes a difference. The recycling club has really brought a great community together due its variety of students and staff that participate.
“I get to be with my friends and it’s also good for the environment,” Kruger said .
The students also feel that this club can spark friendships while making a great contribution to the environment. It can feel very good to know you are participating in something good for the community.
This club has formed unity and inclusivity while helping to fight pollution and they hope to do more.
