Playing a sport requires a lot of physical demand and it comes with the risk of injuries. Because of this, athletes sometimes get hurt.
Luckily students are able to visit the trainer room where they can get the care they need to be the best athletes they can be. That could mean anywhere between getting stretched before practice or getting ice after a tough game. Trainers work everyday with athletes to ensure their physical health.
Having an experienced trainer can make a big difference in an athlete’s experience and success in their sport.
“I didn’t do anything before. I was a college student. This is only my first job,” athletic trainer Miho Sayles said.
Before Sayles became a trainer she was focused on her education. She studied sports medicine and athletic training in college, which prepared herself to help athletes stay healthy and recover from injuries.
“I went to Missouri State for my bachelor’s degree, and I went to Indiana State for the master’s degree,” Sayles said.
Sayles has been an athletic trainer for many years now. Her long career has given her experience in working with athletes with different kinds of injuries and can help them recover better.
“I have been a trainer for 20 years,” Sayles said.
When she finished college she got her first job as an athletic trainer in St. Louis. She then moved to Indianapolis after getting married, deciding to live closer to her husband’s family.
“My first job was in St. Louis after college, and then my husband is from here. There was an opening at North Central High School, so I took this job,” Sayles said.
Sayles loves the relationships that come with the job. She enjoys being present everyday for the athletes on or off the field.
“The relationship that I build with the athletes and coaches is my favorite thing,” Sayles said.
Sayles is motivated by watching athletes compete and play after injuries. She enjoys helping injured athletes through recovery and seeing them do good again.
“Watching them competing and going back to play is what motivates me,” Sayles said.
Sayles also shared her advice for athletes who don’t want to avoid injuries. She encourages athletes to take care of their bodies after practices and games.
“You can’t just go home and do nothing. Drink water, eat, and get enough sleep,” Sayles said.
Having an amazing, experienced trainer is what every school needs to be successful. Luckily, North Central has Miho Sayles.
