When students leave school for summer break in May, some choose to continue school over summer. They can take a plethora of classes, some of the most popular including health and P.E.
Taking these classes over the summer allows flexibility in choosing electives during the school year. However, for students who intend to take health or P.E, they have the choice to take the course in-person or online. Each providing its own benefits.
At first students were only allowed to complete both classes in-person; however following Covid, those parameters changed.
”We first introduced the online option during Covid 19, now we keep it so we have more class space,” counselor Jeremy Corn said.
After students transitioned back to in-person classes, online became very popular because of the flexibility on when and where students can complete their work.
“If I was a student I would take in-person P.E especially as a kid because I liked to be athletic and play games,” Corn said. “I could go either way on health because I would like to be able to have a longer course so I could learn more, but I wouldn’t be able to travel with in-person school.”
Corn emphasized the difficulty of the choice between the two choices.
Freshman Jackson Cross completed both P.E and health online in the summer of 2025. He mentions the concern that many have with the quality of learning while online.
“I learned a lot online but I could have learned more in person, I also liked being able to complete my work on vacation and when I wanted instead of during a set time.
Working remotely is the major reason for the online classes popularity with new and returning students,” Cross said.
Junior Adrian Jones completed in-person P.E in the summer of 2023 and enjoyed being able to meet new people.
“I liked going through the units and play games like bowling and basketball and meet new friends that I will talk to even three years later,” Jones said.
However Jones didn’t enjoy the time commitment of the course.
“It occupied a lot of my free time,” Jones said.
Overall Jones explained the benefits of hands-on learning and the drawbacks of the time commitment.
As the program ages students are posed with the difficult choice of which course to take. This decision ultimately comes down to the students preference.
