The NFL trade deadline is like a national holiday for football fans. So much excitement and drama occurs during the days approaching the start of week 10.
The trade deadline is exactly what it sounds like, it is the end of transactions through trading for the remainder of the season.
This year in particular stands out because so many stars and fan favorites were shipped to different teams.
“If my favorite player Quinton Nelson was traded, I would actually stop being a Colts fan,” junior Tagg Carlye said.
Another thing that makes this trade deadline more interesting is the fact that the biggest trade was made by the Colts. Many Panthers are fans of their hometown team so this created a lot of buzz.
This trade with the New York Jets involved them trading their young All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. In return the Colts gave up wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and 2 first round picks in consecutive years.
“At first, I thought this trade was pretty even and fair, but currently, I think the Jets won the trade,” junior Brennan Bembry said.
Since the trade deadline, the Colts have gotten one win and two losses, which is terrible if you consider that before the trade deadline they had seven wins and two losses.
“Now that he is injured, I think that the Colts will lose even more, which makes the trade even worse,” junior Tagg Caryle said.
Colts fans in general wanted a trade to be made, but most didn’t expect they would trade for Sauce Gardner.
“I thought they were gonna trade for someone like Trey Hendrickson or Crosby”
The Jets dealt another star to the Cowboys in Quinnen Williams. The Jets received a 2nd round pick this year, a first round pick next year, and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
“That, unfortunately, is shaping up to make Jerry Jones look pretty smart,” history teacher and football coach Ed Hruskocy said.
Jerry Jones, the Cowboys Owner, made this trade to address their poor run defense, and Williams stepped up right away and has made an impact.
The trade deadline in general is a pretty recent phenomenon that has only been relevant in the past decade.
“When I was your age nobody made trades in the NFL. The big trade deadline was in baseball at the end of July,” Hruskocy said.
The NFL trade deadline has increased in popularity as people get more involved on social media. The fans want their team to win, and when they post about their thoughts and feelings, teams are more influenced to win now
Big trades for superstars mid season are not at all common, so when it does happen it can shake up the league and cause waves of buzz for fans.
