As fall sports end, winter sports start one of the underappreciated winter sports is wrestling. The wrestling team has made a great impact on many students, as they have more than 40 people on the team.
Wrestling like any other sport requires you to be physical, it requires a lot of physical and mental strength. Wrestling has not always been a popular sport, recently it has risen in popularity.
Allowing for people to want to try it and going out of their comfort zone.
“One of the hardest parts of wrestling is the mental barrier, wrestling’s a tough sport and you’ve really got to love it to stick with it.” Senior Jordin Franklin said.
Although wrestling is almost always on the mat it has also made an impact on many students off the mat.
“The team is very close. We support each other on and off the mat. We all hangout when we get the chance and support each other while wrestling.” junior Troy Reed said.
As North Central Wrestling looks to chase another MIC win they push each other to strive for their own personal goals and team goals as well. North Central Wrestling also has numerous wrestlers who placed in state last year and plan on having even more places this year.
“My personal goal is to win state at 106lb and the team goal is to dominate all season.” sophomore Treveon Elmore said.
A lot of preparation goes into being able to wrestle a match. North Central Wrestling has been conditioning since the beginning of the school year. They continue to practice everyday and work hard preparing for their first match. As the season goes on they plan to keep the hard work up and push themselves harder every day.
“Practices are always tough, we do lots of conditioning and lots of life throughout the week and taper off closer to meets to recover and fine tune things,” Franklin said.
Wrestling can be perceived as an exhausting and rough sport, but if you give it a try it can be seen as a fun and exciting sport to do with people who support and love you .
“My favorite part of this team is that we are all able to joke, and though it’s hard we always find a way to have fun.” Franklin said.
