To many Panthers’ surprise, there has been talk of a new professional sports team coming to Indianapolis. A Major League Soccer (MLS) team.
If you have heard of the Indy Eleven, you know that Indianapolis already has a professional soccer team. While they may be professional, they are in the USL, which is not the highest league in the US.
Across North Central, there are very conflicting opinions on the addition of a MLS or Major League Soccer team to Indianapolis
All students when asked if they would want an MLS soccer team in Indianapolis they said yes. But some would rather acquire a different professional sport instead.
“I would want another sport and that other sport would be volleyball,” sophomore Jania Johnson said.
She feels very passionate about an addition of a volleyball team in Indiana, one of the same caliber as her favorite team Nebraska. Although, the passion is not there for an MLS in Indy.
“I would not go to any games,” Johnson said.
Other students feel differently.
“I would definitely go to games. I think it would be a thrilling experience,” freshman Angelo Fraga said.
Senior Johnathan Jones feels similarly.
“If I could add any sport, I would add soccer to Indianapolis. I think it is above other sports we already have now.”
This shows how even though mainly Indiana is a basketball and football dominated state some feel that a professional soccer team is better than the sports we are known for.
Although there seems to be some praise from around the school, both Fraga and Johnson feel there is not much demand for a team.
“I have not heard a demand for a soccer team, but personally I would want one,” Jones said.
Fraga chooses to stay optimistic.
“I hope there is a demand,” Fraga said.
This shows that while other peers may hate, their opinions stay true.
One question that still remains is where would it be built.
Well Fraga and Johnson seem to think that the ideal location would be Downtown or in Carmel. But Jones says differently.
“I would want the stadium near North Central because that’s where a lot of people live.”
This shows that he thinks that the stadium should go near North Central because a lot of people that might want to go to games live around there.
Throughout the student body, there are conflicting opinions on the logistics of a new MLS team in Indy. But, it is up to the Indianapolis government to decide the future of professional soccer in Indianapolis.
