Most high school students spend their free time hanging out with their friends or stressing over homework. Senior Katie Huneycutt, on the other hand, spends hers dancing in front of people at Fever games.
Huneycutt started dancing at a young age. Huneycutt’s mom signed her up for dance classes at six years old as a way for her to release her energy.
“My mom put me in a class to get my energy out, and I ended up falling in love with it and didn’t try any other sports,” Huneycutt said.
Huneycutt is involved in the Pantherettes dance program at the school as well. In the 2024-2025 school year, Huneycutt was the Accents dance captain.
Huneycutt is not only accelerating in dance, she also does well in school. Huneycutt is in the National Honors Society and also takes AP and honors classes, as she plans to graduate with a North Central honors diploma.
Balancing out a lot of dance and school is hard for her. Huneycutt balances out school and dance by having good time management.
“I sometimes do my homework in the car between [dance] practices and early mornings,” Huneycutt said.
While Huneycutt excels in school, she also excels in dance as well. Huneycutt auditioned for fever back in February of 2024.
“I knew a couple dancers on the Fever Inferno, the dance world is so small, Huneycutt said
Having this connection inspired her to audition.
“As soon as I had the opportunity, I auditioned,” Huneycutt said.
This was Huneycutt’s first job audition in her dancing career.
“[It was] very nerve-wracking, I remember leaving thinking, ‘even if I don’t make it, that was such a cool experience,’” Huneycutt said.
Huneycutt loves to be under the spotlight and just being able to perform.
“My favorite thing is performing, that feeling when the music hits you and you just go for it,” Huneycutt said.
Huneycutt does well when it comes to leading a team. As she was dance captain for Accents in the 2024-2025 school year.
“My first impression of Katie I remember just thinking that she was a very good dancer and seemed like a good leader, she was definitely someone I wanted to be dance captain,” sophomore Braelin Dowdell said.
Huneycutt dances with passion and leads with pride. Huneycutt plans on dancing in the future.
