On Tuesday, February 4, a physical altercation occurred between two students in upper J hall involving a teacher. A teacher saw the altercation and jumped between the two students, trying to separate them, leading to the teacher needing medical care.
“Our teachers did a great job of responding immediately and monitoring hallways during passing periods, ” assistant principal Nick Brewer said.
Parents received a message from Principal Jagga Rent on Tuesday evening with the following information.
“An incident at our school today involving a physical altercation between two students in a hallway,” Rent said. “All emergency protocols were immediately followed. Unfortunately, this incident was witnessed by multiple students, and a staff member who intervened to de-escalate the situation sustained an injury during the process. They are seeking medical support.”
This altercation affected some students, and they now feel more weary and less safe when walking through the hallways.
“It has affected me in the way that I feel way more cautious while walking in the hallways during passing periods,” sophomore Clara Soderques said.
Some students are now concerned about their own safety and the safety of their teachers and friends.
“I now feel scared when I walk in the hallways that students are going to start fighting or arguing with each other,” freshman Tamsyn Budlong said. “I feel more worried for my friends and their safety. I also feel scared for the teachers and their safety at the school.”
While students may feel unsafe or unsure about their safety at school, the main goal of teachers, administrators, officers and counselors is to keep the students safe and protected. They take several safety precautions to try to prevent any altercations from happening again.
“If there is pure conflict, we always encourage our students to find a trusted adult, teacher, counselor, or administrator to help mediate a situation before it escalates,” Brewer said.
Students can refer to the student handbook for what to do if they are involved in a conflict at school or need a teen helpline number to report a dangerous situation.
