Boys golf tryouts are this Monday through Wednesday at Coffin Golf Course, officially kicking off the start to the season. Tryouts consist of all interested golf players playing nine holes in groups with fellow prospective teammates.
This year, former assistant coach Alex Lantz took over for former head coach Leo Hodes as the new head coach of the golf team. During the offseason, Lantz put tremendous effort into giving potential players a chance to practice and get better to prepare for tryouts this week.
Lantz organized weekly practice sessions at Riverside Golf Club and at Highland Country Club, as well as some practices in the south gym.
Many players are anxious about the start of tryouts because there will have to be cuts. This year, the golf team has seen the most amount of players they have seen in multiple years with about 30 people trying out for the team.
Lantz announced that he expects to cut about 10 people, leaving a team of 20.
Sophomore Pierce Rowley is new to the team. He has mixed emotions about tryouts, but is eager to get it started.
“I think I will do alright in tryouts and I am very excited for the season,” Rowley said, “The thing I am looking forward to the most is improving and just trying to get better.”
This seems to be the view of most of the players: to end the season as a better individual player than when they started.
In the past, NC golf has had some success such as winning the MIC last year and having a good overall record in head to head matches. This year, Lantz wants to accomplish more than just winning the MIC and he seems to have the team on the right track.
