After back-to-back seasons without wins for the freshman football team, the Panthers had a successful season finishing 4-5 with wins over Ben Davis, Carmel, Pike and Warren Central. The freshmen played so well that some players are being moved up to play in the sectional game against Cathedral next Friday.
The competitive spirit that the freshmen possess is what drives them to win, and there is confusion as to why the freshmen are succeeding but JV and varsity are not.
During the bye week and sectional week, some of the freshmen players are practicing with varsity, and Coach Hart thinks there will definitely be a few freshmen that start on Friday night. Hart says most of them will see the field because he likes their work ethic.
Earlier in the season, the freshmen scrimmaged JV and beat them 14-0, each team having a few possessions. This opened the coaches eyes for what could be a successful future. The energy of the freshman team is different from varsity, and it shows in their season record.
There has been one freshman, Demetrius Everett, who has started on varsity for the majority of the year, and he has a bright future ahead of him. He is not the only freshman that has a bright future, the whole team could face a plethora of opportunities and success in the rest of their high school careers.
“I think the team was successful this season because we all played as a team,” freshman football player Chris Benjamin said, “I think the new coaches and the energy they brought helped us get some wins.”
