Late start is a privilege available to junior and senior students, and many add it to their schedules. It means dropping a first period entirely, and coming into school by the start of second period each day.
With the new construction, there is less parking space availability compared to previous years. Although late start is typically used for students to sleep in, many people have not been able to do so. Many people have been showing up to school and the only option is to park in the overflow parking lot. This is a farther walk, and makes it more difficult to get to class on time.
It also makes the situation more frustrating to notice cars without parking passes in the lot. Administrators seem to be efficient with ticketing cars and towing, but it may have been beneficial to limit the amount of parking passes given out or eliminate late start if there were not going to be enough parking spots.
Late start is supposed to help students get more sleep to be well-rested at school, but having to leave the house early to get a parking spot takes away the value of it.
The days have been scattered. Some days there are plenty of spots and others there are none left, even when showing up thirty minutes early. This makes time planning in the morning very frustrating because it is impossible to know when to leave.
“I thought having a late start would be nice at first but it’s really not that great. I have encountered countless problems already and we are only one month in,” junior Kyra Grant said, “Although I get to sleep in for an extra hour and avoid traffic, there are little to no parking spots left in the lot when I arrive. I have to walk all the way from the overflow lot which is annoying. We were also told to walk all the way around the building to door one for safety reasons, and at that point there is no reason to even have a late start. There should be a better process for us late start students.”
