There are many options that students can take whether it’s two-year colleges, four year colleges, trade school, workforce, or military services.
Many students will choose college, some students will decide that the workforce is best for them.
“Most students still go to college for further education and to get a degree. Around 70% of students will go to a two year or four year college, 8% of students will go into the military or apprenticeship, and 22% of students will go into the workforce or other,” counselor Jeremy Corn said.
A good way to prepare for jobs straight out of high school is to ask peers for recommendations and to build a resume.
“If it’s your first job to prepare something you could do here, like learn about how to build a resume, certain classes you can take to help with building it. You can also talk to people that have already been in the workforce, and other students because peer communication is usually strongest, in my opinion. Asking teachers for recommendations when going into the workforce would also be good,” Corn said.
“The JEL programs direct you to get a specific area of training, and then a lot of the programs do internships in that job area,” Corn said.
JEL is a huge asset for students as the career center has hands-on classes as most students JEL has helped me a lot. In my CNA class we do a lot of hands-on stuff so it prepares me for the future by giving realistic situations,” junior Sky Mena said.
There are also classes in the North Central building that benefit students.
“I’d say prep for college and careers is a good class, the business courses we have are great, AVID is a good class, and personal finance which is about money, but that’s part of being in a job is making money,” Corn said.
College is a popular pick for North Central students, although some students look to continue their athletic careers after high school.
“I would love to be able to play college baseball at a level where I can compete but also get a good education doing so,” junior Tyler Jaynes said.
“If you can go to college it proves to employers that you can be trusted in the workplace and be responsible, self motivated and can be a good worker. When you go to college you are away from your parents which proves you can be more independent,” Corn said.
Many students think that college was the right fit for them because they already know what they want to do after.
“I enjoy being in legal studies and learning about history and also being involved in law. So I think this is perfect for me,” senior Ryan Khurshid said.
“I think this was the right fit for me because I have a lot of family members that’s became nurses. So I look up to them and I’m in CNA right now and I like that we get to help out the people and stuff like that,” Mena said.
“I think this was the right fit for me because I want to play baseball at the next level and be successful so that hopefully I can play professionally,” Jaynes said.
Some students will also choose to serve our country and go into the military.
“JROTC is a huge asset to students wanting to go into the military. Students learn what it is like to be in a training atmosphere and what it is like to be put into situations that they may come across later in life,” Corn said.
