Although many other schools have a junior and senior prom simultaneously, North Central has long had a junior only prom. Seniors have, instead, looked forward to their Graduation dance.
This year, due to lack of funding, the decision was made by administration to combine both events into one dance, but the graduation dance has been altered.
Class of 2027 feels as though they got the short end of the stick. Many juniors have been looking forward to the magical night of prom, excited to spend a special time with just their classmates. A sense of unity among classes is important. The classes are divided in various ways especially at football games, where freshmen sit at the back and seniors sit at the front furthering the class division.
Class of 2026, on the other hand feels the same way. They don’t want to be sharing the dance floor with younger peers. Having already had their own prom, many seniors wonder why they would go again. Many have expressed the stress that prom brings. Theirs so much to account for when planning. Not to mention, the end of the year is already a stressful enough time for seniors. They have to worry about college, finals, credits and other academic obstacles that may come. These issues don’t allow for the additional stress of finding a dress or tuxedo, searching for a date, or making post and pre-prom plans.
For a while, seniors were under the impression that grad dance would be completely removed, but a compromise has been made. Traditionally seen as a “last hurrah” for seniors, the dance takes place after the school year ends. However, due to limited funding, changes have been made, so this year’s event will look different from previous years.
Complaining, petitioning, and angry remarks will not change the plans for this year. Instead, as a community we might as well make it the best night it can be. A couple ways students can help to make prom special is by participating in fundraisers.
Recently, the class council has been selling products at lunch. They sold USA themed temporary tattoos along with blow up horses during lunch periods. This is a win-win. Students are able to get all dressed in spirit and help fund their prom.
While the dances may look different this year, it’s up to us as a school community to make the night memorable. Dress up, have fun, and celebrate with your classmates—after all, it’s our time to make the best of it.
