Kaya Avery is a sophomore who was involved in the Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS). Her kind nature and never-ending upbeat personality make everyone around her comfortable. Her involvement in LLS captures this description perfectly.
“I got interested at first because my Aunt was a part of the organization through the Bootlegger Bash, and it was also a way to help people who struggle with cancer,” Avery said.
LLS’s mission is to cure blood cancer and improve the lives of all affected people. As the largest organization fighting blood cancer, LLS is at the forefront of research and leadership.
No journey comes without hiccups, especially one as difficult as LLS. However, her changing mindset helped her adapt to and react to new challenges.
“At first, we were excited, but as it went on, we got less motivated,” Avery said. “Our goals of helping people allowed us to stay strong and continue.”
Finding new ways to stay engaged is important, and it helps to be as energetic and thoughtful as Avery.
Those involved in LLS on her team had nothing but positive things to say about her.
“We were already good friends, but on this journey, we became the closest of friends,” sophomore Morgan Naas said. “Her smile and energy was so contagious.”
Even other people not on her team were excited that Avery was participating in LLS.
“It was very cool knowing that someone else from my school was interested in something,” sophomore Marah Mohrnman said.
Outside of LLS, Avery still makes an impact on people’s lives, especially those close to her.
“I volunteered at the Dairy Mart at the State Fair, and I worked at the Indians Center Field Games,” Avery said.
Avery is always finding ways to help and support her community. Her family is very proud of her philanthropic efforts and is enthusiastic about her future.
“She helps me understand what it means to be a mother and I am so lucky to have such an outstanding daughter in my life,’ Mrs. Meyes said. ”She gives my life more and more excitement every day as I watch her grow into a beautiful woman,” Mrs. Meyes said.
Avery has a close relationship with her mom. She is Avery’s biggest fan and mentor.
Avery has credited many teachers with helping her throughout her life.
“Jasmine Holiday is my favorite teacher,” Avery said. “She’s super nice and funny, and she checks on everyone to see if they are down.”
She has multiple teachers who have been very supportive and beneficial.
“My favorite grade school teacher was Robert Scovil,” Avery said. “He kept everyone engaged and his debates every Wednesday were exciting and fun.”
Avery’s contagious personality and commitment to making a difference inspire others to do the same.
