On Saturday at 3 p.m. girls track and field will conclude their indoor season at the Hoosier State Relays meet. The meet is at the Indianapolis fairgrounds, and is the indoor track state finals.
The team has been practicing four days a week and has weights before school two days a week to prepare for meets and stay in shape for the outdoor season.
“On top of having practice four days a week, I have been making sure that I am eating healthy so that I can perform to the best of my ability,” Sophomore Gabby Moore, who will be competing in the girls 4×200 meter relay on Saturday, said, “Along with staying healthy, my coaches and teammates have created a very positive environment for everyone to help us succeed which makes it fun. We all want to do well and hopefully get on the podium.”
The team has been able to utilize the new indoor track in the Paul Loggan Field House, allowing them to practice in an environment similar to one that they race in.
Additionally, this Friday the team will conduct practice on the Indianapolis Fairground track in order to gain familiarity of the facility they will be competing on on Saturday.
“It has been nice having the new Paul Loggan Field house track because we’ve been able to train all winter long without having to worry about weather and stuff outside, which has been really crucial to our training for both sprinters and distance,” girls track coach Chad Wallace said.
Overall, the team has had a lot of success this season. They qualified for many of the races taking place this weekend. Among the qualified races are the 60 meter dash, the 4×200 meter relay, the 4×400 meter relay, the 4×800 meter relay, the distance medley relay, the 3200 meter race and long jump.
“The indoor season has gone really well,” Wallace said, “We’re looking forward to the state finals at the indoor facility this year. There’s a brand new facility on the state fair grounds that is world class, brand new, and the first time the highschool finals will be held there.”
The whole team is looking forward to competing on the state-of-the-art facilities.
“I have personally gotten some personal records, and our 4×200 relay team made it to state and is ranked second overall,” Moore said.
Although the indoor season is coming to a close, the outdoor season is just around the corner. The runners are continuing to work hard, both in and out of practice, to maintain health and prevent injury. The team has high hopes for the outdoor season, after coming off a successful indoor season.
“We have a young group on both the sprint team and the distance team, and they have gotten lots of valuable experience that will hopefully transfer to the outdoor season,” Wallace said.
With the outdoor season coming soon after indoor track, the team has their eyes set on the season.
“I am looking forward to the outdoor season so I can get more PR’s and get the chance to compete in outdoor MIC and hopefully make it to state,” said Moore.
The team will compete at the meet on Saturday and then set their sights on the outdoor season.
