Recently, there has been a great debate about the graduation dress code which poses the question: Should the color of commencement cap and gown be determined by gender?
Herff Jones has provided custom-made graduation attire for NC seniors for years. Graduating seniors are given the chance to buy gear varying from caps, gowns, rings and tassels. Many of these options are not required, however it is essential that students purchase a cap and gown
The graduating senior class has always held its tradition of being assigned graduation uniforms based on gender. Girls wear red caps and gowns, and boys wear black caps and gowns.
The Equality Alliance Club is making an effort in hopes of changing this policy.
The Equality Alliance Club, led by math teacher Amanda Wiesler, created a QR code which addresses this tradition. The code is posted on papers around the school.
Some students believe gown colors should be based on other circumstances, and others believe the policy should remain the same.
“I think that we should keep the policy since it has been implemented for so long,” senior Hannah Radford said.
It is important for the club to gain others’ perspectives so bias does not play a role in potentially creating a change to the long-lasting policy. It is unknown if the club desires to make this switch for this year, or for the next graduation class of 2025.
The Google form that was created is open to students of all grade levels to accumulate as much opinion and data as possible. The three-question survey asks students’ opinions of the policy, and for any opinions or comments they may have.
